In this B2 ESL lesson plan, students explore the topic of drinking culture and discuss changing attitudes towards alcohol, the reasons people choose to drink less, and the growing popularity of sobriety and alcohol-free alternatives. They begin by learning useful vocabulary related to alcohol consumption, including binge drinking, peer pressure, moderation, sobriety, and being sober curious.
Students then read “Why Young People Are Drinking Less”, exploring factors such as health, rising living costs, mental wellbeing, changing social attitudes, and the availability of alcohol-free drinks. They also listen to a personal account from Sam, who explains why she stopped drinking and how sobriety changed her lifestyle.
The lesson includes engaging speaking activities, including a “Being Sober” ranking, discussion questions, controversial debate statements, and “Would You Rather?” questions. Throughout the lesson, students develop their vocabulary, listening and reading skills, fluency, and confidence while discussing the changing role of alcohol in modern society.
There is an excellent homework task to supplement this engaging B2 ESL lesson plan on Why Young People Are Drinking Less. Students are challenged to read an informative article about changing attitudes towards alcohol before answering a series of comprehension questions.
